Stucco detail in The Alhambra

I have been fortunate enough to visit The Alhambra in Granada, Spain, three times, and each time I was blown away the experience. The architecture and design both inside and out is amazing, as are the gardens of the palace and the Generalife especially.

As always, in a building as incredible as this, my photos looked flat and dull compared to the incredible detail and Moorish-style that fills The Alhambra. Because of this I took some photos of the stucco work that I particularly liked and played around with them in Photoshop to add interest. The results from these photographs taken in 2011 can be seen here.

The skill and workmanship seen in this stucco work is outstanding. To create such incredible pieces of sculpture that is perfectly mirrored across a space is quite stunning to me. Take the design below for example. It is almost perfect as it echoes left and right.
These images where on my Flickr account for a while and I was contacted by someone who wanted to print them in a book he was producing about The Alhambra. I’ll be honest, I can’t remember if I ever sent him the photos at high resolution, or if the photos were ever published at all, but at the time I did feel quite chuffed that my images were considered interesting enough to be in a book!

If you are ever in the south of Spain, please make sure you take a day to visit The Alhambra, its gardens and other buildings. You will not regret it, although you may get tired of the number of tourists that frequent the place. I know I do!
